Iucundum, mea vita, mihi proponis: amorem
hunc nostrum inter nos perpetuum usque fore.
di magni, facite ut vere promittere possit,
atque id sincere dicate et ex animo
ut liceat nobis tota perducere vita
aeternum hoc sanctae foedus amicitiae.
My life, you propose to me an agreeable thing:
that this our love will be continuously permanent.
Great gods, make it that she is able to promise truly,
and she says that truly and from (her) heart,
that we may conduct this eternal treaty
of holy friendship for (our) whole life.
- Notice the difference in tone from the earlier Lesbia cycle: it is calm, calling the gods to witness a promise and bless it with eternity
- Note the word play with "nostrum inter nos"
- Note the interlocking word order in the last line.
