Catullus 50

Page history last edited by Catherine 1 yr ago

Yesterday, Licinius, a day full of leisure

we played on my tablets much

as it had been agreed to be interested in pleasure/elegant:

each one of us writing light poetry

was playing now in this (poetic) meter, now in that meter

returning reciprocally through jesting and wine.

And from there/that time I have left your charm

                   burned, Licinius, by [your] cleverness/charm

so that neither does food please me

nor does sleep close my little eyes with calm

but wild I keep tossing in the whole bed with fury

              desiring to see the light,

in order to talk with you and at the same time to be with you

But after the limbs of [my] body worn out with labor

half dead were lying (in ruins) on the bed

I wrote/made this poem for you, delightful one,

from which you might learn of my suffering.

Now beware to be bold, and our prayers

I pray beware to reject the little eye/jewel

lest Nemesis demands penalties from you

she is violent/powerful; beware/don’t harm or strike/offend her
