Catullus 60

Num te leaena montibus Libystinis

aut Scylla latrans infima inguinum parte

tam mente dura procreavit ac taetra,

ut supplicis vocem in novissimo casu

contemptam haberes, a nimis fero corde?

Did a lioness in the African mountains

or Scylla, barking with the lowest part of sexual organs

give birth to you with so hard or foul a mind

so you hold the voice of a suppliant despised, a too cruel of heart?

  • Note that these lines mirror lines 154-7 of poem 64 -- is it a rough draft?
  • Make sure to look up Scylla as a classical reference
  • What effect is created by the lack of reference to an actual offense?
